Quick answer: A 4 post car lift is a drive on lift with two runways supported by four columns. You drive the vehicle on, raise it, and lock it at height. It is the easiest lift to use for long term storage, parking a second car over a daily driver, and under car work such as oil changes and exhaust jobs. For wheels free work like brakes and tires, add a rolling jack or choose a lift with built in jacks. On our store today, storage and service four post car lifts start at about $3,399, and heavy duty service lifts run about $5,700 to $8,495.

What a four post car lift is good at

  • Storage and parking. Park one car on the runways and a second underneath. Drip trays keep fluids off the car below.
  • Under car service. Oil changes, exhaust, transmission and driveline work with the suspension loaded on its wheels.
  • Easy loading. There are no lift arms to position. You drive on, set the parking brake and raise.
  • Long and heavy vehicles. Long runway and wide models fit dually trucks, vans, boats and trailers.

The main limitation is wheels free work. Because the tires sit on the runways, you need a rolling jack or bridge jack to lift the wheels. Our 2 post vs 4 post car lift guide compares both styles side by side.

Storage lift or service lift?

Storage and hobby lifts

Storage lifts are built to park a vehicle at height for long periods. Many are portable, run on 110V and include drip trays. Look closely at clearance under the runways, because that decides what fits underneath.

Service and maintenance lifts

Service lifts add capacity, longer runways, wider stances and more lock positions for daily shop use. Several heavier models in our range use 220V power, so check the product page before you plan the circuit.

Specialty four post lifts

4 post lift with jacks: rolling jacks and bridge jacks

A rolling jack rides on the runway rails and lifts the wheels off the runways, which turns a four post storage lift into a useful brake and suspension lift. Match the jack to your lift, because rail spacing and capacity vary.

If you would rather skip a separate jack, the Olympic 4PXL-10B has scissor jacks built into the runways with a published rise of 2.95 to 15.75 inches. Other accessories, such as the Katool KT-CR2 caster kit for the KT-4H110, are on our lift accessories page.

How to size a four post lift for your garage

  1. Ceiling height. Add the lift height you need, the height of the top vehicle and some margin. Our car lift ceiling height, concrete and power guide walks through the math.
  2. Clearance under the runways. If you are parking a car underneath, compare its roof height to the published clearance. The Olympic 4PC-6 lists 60 inches, the Mayflower Pro 8000 lists 69 inches and the Olympic 4PHR-9X lists 78.74 inches.
  3. Runway length and drive through width. Long wheelbase trucks need long runways. The Mayflower Pro 8000 lists a 165 inch runway and 80 inch drive through width, while the Olympic 4PXL-10 lists 195 inch runways and a 112 inch drive through width.
  4. Capacity. Pick a lift rated comfortably above the heaviest vehicle you will raise.
  5. Power. Many storage lifts run on 110V. Heavier service lifts such as the Olympic 4PHDXL-12 and Katool KT-4H120X list 220V.
  6. Floor. Check the concrete requirement on the product page. Mayflower lists 4 inch depth, 3000 PSI rebar reinforced concrete for its Blacksmith four post lifts.

Safety features to look for

  • Mechanical locks at several heights. The KT-4H110 lists 14 locking positions spaced every 4.7 inches.
  • Single point lock release. One lever releases all four locks together.
  • Slack cable protection. Stops the runway if a cable loses tension.
  • Load testing. The KT-4H110 and Fortisky FL-90PL are listed as tested to 115 percent of rated capacity under dynamic load and 150 percent under static load.

Always lower the lift onto its locks before working or parking underneath, and follow the manual for your model.

Which four post car lift should you buy?

  • Home garage storage on a budget: Olympic 4PC-6, Katool KT-4H850 or Mayflower Pro 8000.
  • Tall vehicles or more room underneath: Mayflower Pro8000XLH, Katool KT-4H950 or Olympic 4PHR-9X.
  • Storage plus regular service: Katool KT-4H110 with a KT-RJ70 rolling jack.
  • Dually trucks and long vehicles: Olympic 4PXL-10 or 4PXL-10B.
