- Minor or visible damage — inspect before signing — Inspect the shipment before signing, photograph any damage, and describe it specifically on the Bill of Lading — e.g. “Crate damaged on left side.” A generic notation such as “subject to inspection” may not adequately document a freight claim. Resolution is determined through the applicable claim process and may involve a carrier claim, replacement parts, repair, supplier or manufacturer action, replacement, or another appropriate remedy.
