Car Stacker vs Tilting Parking Lift: Which Garage Storage Lift Fits Your Space?
Car stackers vs tilting parking lifts compared: ceiling height, capacity per level, floor space and power, so you can choose the right car storage lift for your garage.
Quick answer: A car stacker is a 4 post parking lift that holds vehicles level on runways or platforms, one above the other, and it scales from two cars to six. A tilting parking lift raises one vehicle on a platform that angles up, usually somewhere around 10 to 16 degrees, so it can fit under a lower ceiling than a level lift with the same clearance. If you have the ceiling height, a car stacker is the more flexible garage storage lift. If your ceiling is the hard limit and you only need to store one extra car, a tilting lift is worth a look.
This guide compares the two side by side, then walks through ceiling height, capacity, floor space and power so you can pick the right car storage lift for your garage. To see the stackers and storage lifts we carry, browse our car parking lifts.
What is a car stacker?
A car stacker is a parking lift built to store vehicles vertically. The simplest version is a 4 post storage lift: you drive onto two runways, raise the car, set it on the mechanical locks and park a second car underneath. Larger stackers add more levels or more width.
- Single 4 post storage lifts. One car on top, one below. Examples include the Katool KT-4H110 (11,000 lb capacity, 110V or 220V), the Katool KT-4H950 (9,500 lb), the Fortisky FL-90PL (9,000 lb), the Olympic 4PHR-9X high rise storage lift with 78.74 inches under the tracks, and the Mayflower Pro 8000.
- Two car stackers. A wide 4 post lift with room for two cars side by side on top and two more parked below. The Olympic 4PXW-10 is rated at 10,000 lb with 192 inches between posts and 78 inches of clearance under the tracks.
- Triple and multi level stackers. Three or four levels in a single parking footprint, aimed at collectors, dealers and storage businesses. The Olympic Triple Stacker 4032-S stores three vehicles with 11,000 lb total capacity (5,000 lb upper and 6,000 lb lower deck). The Triple Stacker 4032-XL is the wider, longer version for big classic cars and trucks, at 16,000 lb total capacity. The Olympic 4032-4 Four Stacker stores four vehicles, and the Olympic 4032-6 is a three level, six car storage lift rated at 9,000 lb per platform.
Every stacker keeps the car level. That matters if you store a vehicle for months at a time, and it also means a single 4 post storage lift can double as a service lift for oil changes, inspections and exhaust work.
What is a tilting parking lift?
A tilting parking lift uses a single platform that pivots as it rises. The rear of the platform stays low and the front lifts, so the parked car sits at an angle. Because the high end of the car is near the back wall and the low end is near the door, a tilting lift can give a usable gap underneath with less overall ceiling height than a level lift. Many models list a tilt angle in the 10 to 16 degree range.
The trade offs are easy to miss:
- The car is stored at an angle. Check the maker guidance for your vehicle if you plan long term storage on a slope.
- The space underneath is wedge shaped. The car below has more headroom at one end than the other, so a tall SUV may only fit one way round.
- One car up, one car down. Tilting lifts do not scale to three or four levels the way a stacker does.
- Storage only. An angled platform is not a service lift.
We do not list a dedicated tilting lift right now. If your ceiling rules out a stacker, look at a two post parking lift such as the Katool KT-P2700, which is rated at 6,600 lb, raises its platform to 82.68 inches, runs on 110V or 220V single phase power, and has an optional lower device height of 120.3 inches. Stations can also be linked side by side for rows of parking.
Car stacker vs tilting parking lift at a glance
| Question | Car stacker | Tilting parking lift |
|---|---|---|
| How many cars per footprint? | Two to six, depending on the model | Two (one up, one down) |
| Is the stored car level? | Yes | No, it sits at an angle |
| Ceiling height needed | Higher, set by the column height | Lower for the same gap underneath |
| Can it double as a service lift? | Single 4 post storage lifts often can | No |
| Best for | Collectors, multi car households, dealers, storage businesses | One extra car in a low garage |
Step 1: Measure your ceiling first
Ceiling height decides more garage storage lift purchases than anything else. Measure from the floor to the lowest obstruction, which is often the garage door track, opener or a light, not the ceiling itself. Then compare it with the overall height or column height on the product page, and leave room for the roof of the top car.
Some published heights from the lifts above give a sense of scale. The Olympic 4PXW-10 lists an overall height of 91.69 inches. The Triple Stacker 4032-S lists 172 inch columns, the Triple Stacker 4032-XL 178.11 inches and the 4032-6 168 inches. The four level 4032-4 lists an overall height of 229.45 inches, so it belongs in a tall commercial building, not a typical house garage. Our car lift ceiling height, concrete and power guide walks through the full calculation.
Step 2: Match capacity to the top car, level by level
On a multi level stacker, each platform has its own rating. The Triple Stacker 4032-S, for example, lists 5,000 lb on the upper deck and 6,000 lb on the lower, and the Four Stacker lists 5,500 lb on level two and 4,400 lb on levels three and four. Put the heaviest vehicle where the rating allows, and keep the curb weight of every car well under the platform it sits on.
Step 3: Check footprint and drive through width
Measure length and width against the bay. Wide vehicles need a generous drive through width. The 4PXW-10 lists 173 inches, the Triple Stacker 4032-S lists 95.3 inches, and the Olympic 4PHR-9X lists 87.7 inches. Leave room to open doors and walk around the posts.
Step 4: Plan power and concrete
Many single 4 post storage lifts run on 110V, which suits a home garage. Larger stackers often call for 220V. The 4032-6 lists a 220V, 5.5 HP power unit, for example. Concrete requirements vary by model, so read the vendor installation notes before you order.
Step 5: Decide whether you also want to work on the cars
If you want a lift for both parking and maintenance, a single 4 post storage lift with a rolling bridge jack is hard to beat. The jack rides on the runways and lifts the wheels free for brake and tire work. See our lift accessories, and if service is the main job, compare the options in our 2 post vs 4 post car lift guide.
Exotic and low cars on a parking lift
Low sports cars and exotic cars need a shallow approach. Look for low runway height and long ramps. The Olympic 4PXW-10 lists low deck runways for lowered cars and extra long runways, and the Katool KT-P2700 lists an angle adjusted drive on ramp for a low approach. Measure your car ground clearance against the ramp before you buy, and take wheel width into account on narrow runways.
Which one should you buy?
- One extra car, normal ceiling: a single 4 post storage lift. It also works as a service lift.
- Four cars in the space of two: a two car stacker such as the Olympic 4PXW-10.
- Three to six cars in one footprint: a triple or multi level stacker, if the building is tall enough.
- Low ceiling, one extra car: a tilting lift or a compact two post parking lift, after checking the stored angle and the space underneath.

Frequently asked questions
Is a car stacker the same as a parking lift?
A car stacker is one type of parking lift. The term usually means a lift that stacks vehicles level, one above another, on two or more levels.
How much ceiling height do I need for a car stacker?
It depends on the model and the cars. Compare your clear ceiling height with the overall or column height on the product page, then add the roof height of the top car. Multi level stackers need far more height than a single storage lift.
Why would I choose a tilting parking lift?
Mainly for a low ceiling. Tilting the platform gives a usable gap below with less total height. The trade off is that the stored car sits at an angle and the lift only holds one car up.
Can I store an exotic car on a 4 post lift?
Yes, if the approach angle and runway height suit the car. Look for low runways and long ramps, and check the ramp angle against the car clearance before you drive on.
Can a garage storage lift run on household power?
Many single 4 post storage lifts list 110V operation. Larger stackers often need 220V. Check the voltage on each product page.
